Recent research suggests that 77% of electric vehicle (EV) purchases are driven by sustainability concerns, so chances are that if you’re an EV driver you’re invested in your overall carbon footprint.
While the carbon efficiencies of EVs are often compared, what’s not often discussed is the environmental impact of an electric vehicle charger.
DC chargers for example, emit on average 727,083 kg of CO2 over the course of their lifetime, whereas AC chargers only contribute 24,114kg. It’s also important to consider the country of manufacture into the equation when purchasing an electric vehicle charger.
How much CO2 does driving an electric vehicle save?
Whilst there’s controversy around the carbon dioxide released during the battery creation process for electric vehicles, over an EV’s lifetime they significantly offset this amount in comparison to internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles.
On average, this equates to around 50% less CO2 being released into the atmosphere, but it depends on the amount of renewable energy used to charge the vehicle. In Sweden, EVs can produce up to 70% less CO2 than an ICE car. The good news is that over time, this percentage is only going to increase with the advent of battery recycling and as renewables are more commonly used as a power source.
What’s the impact of buying an Australian-made EV charger?
The transport sector is a significant contributor to pollution globally, and international shipping alone accounts for around 3% of emissions per annum.
Research from the World Economic Forum suggests that sourcing components locally and reducing the distance between the supplier and the consumer has an integral role in managing supply chain emissions.
In addition, Australia’s strong environmental laws mean that our manufacturing process has substantially less impact than overseas processes.
Investing in a locally-made charger for your electric vehicle just makes sense. After all, one of the main advantages of an EV is that it’s better for our planet, so choosing the most sustainable charger available just adds to your overall positive impact.
EVOS Energy is not only Australian-owned and designed, but we take it one step further by manufacturing our AC chargers right here in Brisbane. We are deeply committed to sustainability and are immensely proud to contribute to Australia’s energy transition.
In the words of EVOS CEO, Marcelo Salgado:
“Reducing the carbon footprint of our charging stations is really important to us and that was a major driver for us to manufacture in Australia and to utilise as many local suppliers as possible that we could.”
